Weekly flu-case count in New York state declines for first time this season

There were 1,702 New Yorkers hospitalized with the flu last week, the state reported in a release.

In the past 12 weeks, there were 101,312 confirmed cases of the flu in New York and 18,282 people were hospitalized for the illness.

Among counties in Central New York, the state health department reported 2,553 cases of the flu in Onondaga County this season, 2,678 in Oneida County, 1,790 in Broome County, 1,019 in Oswego County, and 883 in Jefferson County.

In New York’s five boroughs, there have been 38,322 confirmed cases of the flu reported.

“While the decrease we are seeing in both the number of laboratory confirmed influenza cases and hospitalizations is encouraging news, New Yorkers must continue to be vigilant,” said state health commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker. He urged those who have not yet been vaccinated to do so quickly. “And I am again reminding all New Yorkers to practice good hand hygiene and stay home if they are sick.”
