Wegmans Food Markets is the largest employer among private-sector corporations in the 16-county Central New York region. That’s according to the upcoming Top 100 Corporations report from the Business Journal News Network.
The regional supermarket chain, based in Rochester, has 84 stores in six states and employs about 5,500 people locally, according to the Top 100 report to be published next Friday. As one of the nation’s largest-private employers, Wegmans employs almost 44,000 people total and generated revenue of $7 billion in 2013.
The second-largest private enterprise in the CNY region is the home-based Oneida Indian Nation Enterprises. Oneida Indian Nation, which operates the Turning Stone Resort Casino and several other businesses, has a local workforce of 4,500 people.

The new Top 100 Corporations list is a shortened, spin-off version of past years’ Business Journal 500 that ranks the largest private-sector corporations in the 16-county region by total number of CNY employees. Collectively, these 101 businesses (it’s 101 companies due to ties) employ nearly 97,000 in the region.
