SKANEATELES FALLS — Welch Allyn will distribute a hospital patient monitoring system from a Massachusetts company under a new distribution agreement.
Welch Allyn, a medical-device manufacturer based in Skaneateles Falls, signed off on a collaboration and distribution agreement with EarlySense Ltd. of Waltham, Mass. It will distribute technology called the EarlySense System to hospitals nationwide.
The EarlySense System uses sensors under bed mattresses to monitor patients’ heart rates, respiration rates, movement, bed entries, and bed exits. It can use that information to alert medical providers when a patient’s condition is deteriorating.

EarlySense is pitching the system for monitoring patients who are on medical surgical floors but not in intensive care. Nurses typically check such patients once every four hours, while the EarlySense system can alert clinical staff members as soon as a patient’s vital signs drop, according to the company.
“Together, Welch Allyn and EarlySense are targeting more than 1 million acute-care beds that clinicians widely agree can be made much safer with smart, continuous monitoring,” EarlySense CEO Avner Halperin said in a news release.
The companies did not share any additional details of their distribution agreement.
“The opportunity to partner with EarlySense enables Welch Allyn to continue providing its customers with proven solutions that answer the growing clinical, economic, and regulatory needs to reduce adverse clinical events and improve patient safety,” Welch Allyn President and CEO Steve Meyer said. “We view this relationship as an important advancement that brings better, more cost-effective care to previously unmonitored beds.”
