Wilmorite proposes casino for Seneca County

TYRE — Wilmorite, Inc., a Rochester–based commercial real-estate development, construction, and management company, today unveiled a proposal to build a casino in the town of Tyre in Seneca County.

The recently approved Proposition #1, an amendment to the state constitution, allows for the development of up to seven new casinos in New York.

The Wilmot Casino & Resort will apply for one of the first four casino licenses that will be awarded upstate, according to news release about the project.

The Wilmot Casino & Resort, presented publicly Wednesday night at a public meeting in Tyre, would be a $350 million project. It would feature a casino, hotel, spa, dining and entertainment.

The site for the proposed casino is next to exit 41 of the New York State Thruway, the company said.

It is estimated that the facility attract more than 9,000 daily visitors, or more than 3.3 million annually, Wilmorite said.

“… it will create approximately 1,800 permanent jobs and 1,200 construction jobs, as well as provide significant revenue for local governments to be able hold the line or reduce taxes,” Thomas Wilmot, Sr., chairman of Wilmorite, said in the news release.

The firm is “committed” to recruiting, training and hiring local employees for both construction and permanent jobs to fill what will be a $50 million annual payroll, Wilmot added.

If chosen, Wilmorite would use the venue to “promote, feature and sell” local products, such as New York wines, beers, spirits, and other food and agricultural products, the firm said.

Wilmorite becomes the latest upstate organization to announce a proposal for a casino.

Tioga Downs on Nov. 18 broke ground for construction on a three-story parking complex to be built at the racing and casino venue.

It represents the first phase of a large-scale construction project, the organization said.

In addition, Traditions at the Glen resort in Johnson City has also announced a proposal for a $150 million casino project.

The Vista Hospitality Group, headquartered in Kitchener, Ont. with a U.S. office in Binghamton, has also announced plans for a casino proposal.

The Vista Group lists the Quality Inn and Suites Vestal-Binghamton and the Holiday Inn Arena in Binghamton among the properties it manages, according to its website.
